La ozonoterapia en pacientes con enfisema pulmonar
Resumen
Abstract
Emphysema produces a patient functional limitation that can interferes with his daily activities, decreasing his quality of life and affecting his emotional state, pointing up in its etiology the role of the oxidative stress. Ozone is capable to stimulate the protective antioxidant enzymatic system against the reactive oxygen species. Also, it is a broad spectrum germicide, is able to modulate the immunological system and to improve blood circulation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of ozone therapy, by rectal application, in patients with emphysema. Sample was divided at random into three groups: Group 1 - 20 patients that maintain their base treatment plus 20 sessions of ozone (one daily) by rectal way (doses of 6 mg). This cycle of ozone treatment was repeated after 3 months. Group 2- as group 1, but using medical oxygen instead of ozone. Group 3 - 10 patients to which were applied only the base treatment. The behaviour of the respiratory function test, arterial hemogasometry, imaging studies and clinical evaluation were performed. The ozone group was the only one that achieved significant improvements in the respiratory function test and the arterial oxygen partial pressure, with 11 improved patients. CT scan and x-ray remained without modifications at the end of the study, in all groups. No side effects were observed during the study. Ozone therapy could be a beneficial therapeutic process in patients with emphysema.
