Resumen

Background: The adherence to pharmacological treatment (APT) is crucial to achieve metabolic control and to decrease complications in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). Aim: To establish the frequency of APT in type 2 diabetic patients (DM2) and its influence on blood glucose and to identify factors that influence on the lack of ATP. Material and methods: Diabetic patients were interrogated about sociodemographic factors, their disease evolution, their fasting blood glucose levels and the use of other treatments. The APT was evaluated with the Morisky-Green questionnaire, patient beliefs about treatments with the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire (BMQ), and patient knowledge about DM2 with the standard questionnaire. Results: A representative sample of 400 individuals of both sexes was studied, finding that 74.5% of patients failed to APT of DM2. Among such patients, there was a significantly greater level of blood glucose, preoccupation, and lack of knowledge of the disease. Among men, the lack of APT was associated with the refusal to undergo the blood glucose test (Odds ratio (OR)=3.70; 95% confidence intervals (CI), 1.58-8.66), while for women it was associated with the consumption of medicinal plants (OR=2.53; IC 95%, 1.23-5.23). Conclusions: The lack of APT in patients with DM2 is a serious problem and associated with lack of knowledge of the disease. It is urgent to strengthen the educational programs about DM2 to promote adherence to treatment.
