The existence of intra or extra pulmonary shunts is proposed as a cause of refractory hypoxemia in patients with COVID-19 infection. We report a 73-year-old male with a severe pneumonia caused with COVID-19 who had a persistent hypoxemia and orthodeoxia during the recovery phase of the infection. A contrast enhanced transthoracic echocardiography showed a persistent foramen ovale with a left to right shunt. He was subjected to a percutaneous closure of the shunt, the hypoxemia subsided, and the patient was discharged.Descargas
